History
Sy Doan began tailoring at the age of 12 as a hobby; it developed into a passion. He started his career at a men's clothing store and worked part-time at home to support his family. Sy left that store in 1995 to pursue the chance to work at an upscale department store that was coming to Omaha. For two years, he worked in the Alterations department at Von Maur and was even promoted to head tailor.
Business at home was growing, so he began speaking with consultants about opening his own tailor shop. An opportunity came up for him to rent a small space in downtown Omaha, and that was where the first Sy's Tailor Shop opened in 1997. He ran his business Downtown for the next two years, but the time had come to relocate to a bigger space. Sy patiently searched for an ideal location that would accommodate his customers and his business.
His search ended when a spot at the Westroad's Mall became available (coincidentally beside his former employer, Von Maur). In 1999, he made Westroad's Mall the new home of his business.
The years went on and the business steadily grew. By the end of 2004 after the holiday season, he knew that his shop was no longer fit for the work or amount of customers. It became clear that opening a second store was the most appropriate thing to do. He consulted this time with Oakview Mall and was able to open his second shop in January 2005.
Sy's Oakview store did not remain there long because a better opportunity had come to relocate to 120th and Blondo. He moved his second store to the North Park Shopping in early 2006 where it now remains. A personal injury in the summer of 2006 forced him to sell his Westroads location. The second store now remains the only store and stands at 120th and Blondo.
